National Junior Framework – Scottish Junior Flag Championship

What is the Scottish Junior Flag Championship?

The Scottish Junior Flag Championship is an exciting new event providing fantastic playing opportunities for young golfers in the early stages of their development.

Staged in partnership with the Paul Lawrie Foundation, Stephen Gallacher Foundation and The Junior Flag Challenge, the Championship is a series of regional events open to beginner level juniors, under the age of 12 and with no handicap. Our aim is to introduce young players to competitive golf in a fun and relaxed environment through a ‘Flag Competition’ format.

Event Format

The events will give young players across Scotland the opportunity to progress from coaching programmes at their own club into competition golf, where juniors will play on a shortened 9-hole course with a modified scoring format. Each player will be given a flag and starting at the 1st hole, they will have 36 shots to play as many holes as possible, placing their flag where their 36th shot finishes. This format has proved popular with our partners’ junior events and we’re looking forward to expanding the schedule for teams of juniors.

Running a Flag Event Qualifier at your Club

When your club registers for one of the Regional events, you will be provided with a competition pack that gives you the resources to stage a Flag Event for eligible juniors at your own club, which you can run as your own qualifying event. The top four players from your club qualifier will be invited to represent your club at the Regional event you registered for, which will be hosted by one of our three partners.

The top team from each Regional event will earn a place in the Grand Final which will take place at the Gleneagles Academy course on Sunday 23 August, with the opportunity to be crowned Scottish Junior Flag Champions!

Why should our Club take part?

If your Club is looking to increase the number of juniors progressing to competition play, obtaining a handicap and being retained as members, Flag Events are perfect for you! They provide a great opportunity for juniors to develop their game on the course in a fun and relaxed format, while introducing them to scoring, etiquette and other aspects of the game. In turn, they are a great way of engaging parents and creating a buzz at your club on the day of the event.

After registering for the Scottish Junior Flag Championship, your club will receive the following kit, enabling you to run your in-house qualifying event as well as other Flag Events throughout the season as a great addition to your junior programme:

  • A ‘How To’ manual for running a Flag Event
  • A set of flags for players to use at your club’s Flag Event
  • Player scorecards
  • Flag Event Scoresheet
